Absenteeism - Convert intangibles into monetary value

by JobOutlets.com - 11/05/2008

"Absenteeism kills your company productivities..."

Absenteeism probably is one of the issues that frequently occur in the workplace. At lower rates, the organization would not consider it being a big issue, once the absenteeism rate increases to a certain level, then absenteeism should be immediately taken care of.

The example below illustrates how absenteeism take effect on a hospital business.

In other words, the hospital lost over $3.5mil annually and keep growing.

Each HR function also combine company rules and regulations regarding all types of leaves, which normally cover sick leave, annual leave, maternity leave, …and companies also have some calculation to encourage more contribution from its workforce. Though all employee are well informed about the policy, absenteeism still occur.

Dealing with the issue would take times and effort from the management team. Rules and regulations would not stop the absenteeism rate from growing. Disciplinary would not work too. First thing the management team will do is to analyze the situation then to come up with some number, like the example above. Once the management realize kind of serious scenario they face with, they would certainly find out what is going on in the company.

Normally, company should re cap all records for the past 3 years, to find out if the occurrences shape out a pattern. More employee ‘s off on Monday? More employee’s off after long holiday? Or by personal issues? Family? Kids???

The best way to do this is to interview personally some groups among the company to find out the causes, and conducted by a third party or person. The management probably find out interesting causes. Once the problem is identified, try to find some solutions to fix it. It could be a matter of motivation that causes absenteeism, or whatever.
